Faithful Stewardship for Your Ministry

Protect your ministry.
Care for your people.

Building Safer Ministries equips churches, ministries, and faith-based organizations with the workplace investigations, training, and Affirmative Defense framework that the rest of the regulated world already uses, translated into ministry language and rooted in stewardship.

"The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty." Proverbs 27:12
Threats to Your Mission

The exposure most ministry leaders don't see

Faithful preparation begins with honest assessment. The legal landscape governing churches and ministries has shifted, and most leaders are operating on assumptions that no longer hold.

The Faithful Stewardship Framework

Five pillars, drawn from a single principle: prepare carefully

Each component exists separately in the marketplace, typically marketed in corporate language that doesn't fit ministry contexts. We deliver them as a unified system, translated for the way ministries actually operate.

Staff Care Covenant

What other organizations call an "employee handbook," we frame as a covenant of how your ministry team treats one another. Drafted for your denomination, your governance structure, and the realities of paid staff alongside volunteers.

Equipping Your Shepherds

Annual training for staff and volunteers on harassment prevention, discrimination, and workplace misconduct, written in ministry language, delivered with theological grounding, and documented to satisfy state mandates and the Affirmative Defense.

Confidential Reporting Channel

A neutral place for staff and volunteers to report concerns when going to a senior pastor or denominational leader feels impossible. Posted, multilingual, anonymous if needed, and documented from the first call.

Truthful Inquiry

When a staff or volunteer concern arises, our investigators conduct video-documented interviews with the same neutrality and methodology used in federal employment matters, preserving accuracy, dignity, and the documentation your board, denomination, and counsel will need.

Faithful Preparation

Quarterly check-ins, annual policy refresh, and on-call advisory for the moments when your leadership team has to make a difficult decision and wants someone outside the organization to think it through with them.

Wherever You Lead

A program that meets your role

Senior Pastors

"Your people trust you to lead well, in the pulpit and behind the scenes. We help you do both."

Executive Pastors & Administrators

"You're already managing the business side of ministry. We close the compliance gaps you can see and the ones you can't."

Denominational Leaders

"Your churches' compliance is your denomination's reputation. One serious incident affects everyone you serve."

Church Boards & Elders

"Faithful governance means knowing your legal obligations alongside your spiritual ones. We help your board ask better questions."

How We Begin

A relationship before a contract

Every BSM engagement starts with a listening conversation, not a sales pitch. We hear your ministry's story before recommending anything.

  1. 1

    A Listening Conversation

We start by understanding your ministry, your structure, your governance, your denomination, your staff makeup, your past concerns, and what keeps your senior leadership up at night. No sales pitch.

  2. 2

    Faithful Preparation Plan

A written assessment of where your stewardship framework stands today and what installing the five pillars would look like for your specific ministry. You decide what's right for your timing and budget.

  3. 3

    Quiet Implementation

Rollout that doesn't disrupt your ministry. Policies are introduced thoughtfully, training is scheduled around your calendar, and your staff hears about the work as a sign of care for them, not corporate mandate.

  4. 4

    Ongoing Partnership

Annual refresh of policies and training, quarterly check-ins, and on-call advisory whenever a difficult situation arises. You're never figuring it out alone.

FAQ

Common questions

How is this different from MinistrySafe?
MinistrySafe is the established standard for child sexual abuse prevention, and they do that work well. We don't compete with them. We complement them. Building Safer Ministries focuses on what MinistrySafe doesn't: workplace investigations between staff members, the Faragher/Ellerth Affirmative Defense, staff-to-staff harassment, employment-law compliance, and ongoing programs that keep your stewardship framework current. Many ministries need both services.
Doesn't the ministerial exception protect us from EEOC claims?
The ministerial exception is much narrower than most church leaders assume. It applies to a specific category of clergy and ministerial roles, not to administrative staff, custodial staff, music staff who aren't ordained, accounting staff, or volunteers in administrative roles. Title VII applies to churches with 15+ employees for those non-ministerial positions. State employment laws apply at lower thresholds in many states. The exception is real but it's limited; we help you understand exactly where it does and doesn't protect you.
Is this only for large churches?
No. We serve ministries from 15-employee single-campus churches to denominations with thousands of affiliated congregations. The five-pillar framework scales: a smaller ministry might have a simpler policy stack and quarterly training cadence, while a large church needs multi-campus consistency, denominational alignment, and more sophisticated reporting infrastructure. The principles are the same; the implementation matches your size.
How do you handle the theological and pastoral dimensions of these issues?
Carefully and respectfully. Our team has direct experience working with churches, denominations, and faith-based nonprofits across the theological spectrum. We don't impose a particular theological framework. We work within yours. Pastoral care, congregational unity, and restorative outcomes are part of how we think about every situation; they don't get sacrificed to legal mechanics.
What does this actually cost?
Programs are scoped to ministry size, denominational structure, and what you already have in place. A church with a basic handbook and informal practices needs more than a denomination with mature compliance staff. Initial conversations and the written assessment are at no cost. You'll only invest when you decide the path forward makes sense for your ministry.
